How to Clean Countertops: The Right Way for the Right Type

Different kinds of countertops demand different cleaning methods. A clean, fresh countertop does not just make you happy, but it also helps keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. As kitchens and bathrooms are where most of the countertops are located, these areas around the house are mostly waterlogged. Moisture can contribute to mold growth and mildew, which may be unsafe for people who suffer from allergies and asthma attacks.

To help you with cleaning different kinds of kitchen countertops, The Kitchen Store shares a peek at the most common styles of countertops and cleaning methods you can use.

Granite Countertops

Thoroughly clean your granite counters by washing the surfaces with lukewarm, and soapy water. Rinse thoroughly after all the layers are covered.

Nevertheless, if by any means, when you do your custom kitchen remodeling and stubborn stains persist, a mild solution of bleach may be used. But do not use an abrasive cleaner or scrub pads as they can scrape the surface. If this won’t work, prepare a baking soda and water mixture or talc combined with a diluted solution containing chlorine, bleach, or hydrogen peroxide.

Carefully clean the area with the mixture and a soft and fluffy brush. Multiple applications may be necessary to strip stains from your granite countertops.

As a finishing touch, polish granite countertops using a stone sealer. It helps to prevent blemishes, which makes it much easier to keep granite countertops clean.

Stainless Steel Countertops

While they are typically installed in kitchens, homeowners, especially those around Beverly Hills, California, also like these countertops’ appearances in bathrooms. The issue, however, with this type of material is water. When water spills or droplets are left for a prolonged period, it may leave spots and corrode the surface.

It is also best to employ a skilled cabinet refacing expert because they have the necessary skills to clean and repair all sorts of countertops. They use unique stainless steel cleaning products to keep bathrooms and kitchens sparkling clean.

Stone Countertops (Slate, Soapstone, and Limestone)

Stones are the most popular types of countertops most homeowners have in their kitchens and bathrooms. When cleaning it, mist the surface with a water-based solution and use a washcloth or fluffy wet rag. Strictly discourage using acidic cleaners such as vinegar and ammonia because it destroys the quality of the stone. To seal countertops made from stone, use an ideal sealer designed for your specific stone to eliminate scratches stains and make routine cleaning simpler effectively.

Wood Countertops

From custom kitchen cabinets to countertops and furniture, there is no question that wood offers a timeless feel, no matter where you place it. Especially when you’re using wood as your countertop, may it be in the kitchen or bathroom, it requires a great deal of upkeep. If moisture condenses over it, be sure that the surface is immediately wiped dry; otherwise, it may cause further damage to your wood countertop.

Furthermore, it is not advisable to wash wood countertops with water. Instead, use a sponge and specialized cleaning solutions that are exclusively used for woods. Also, a big no to abrasive cleaning solutions or bleach because it can harm the wood.
