3 Factors to Consider When Buying Cabinet Hardware

There are a few things to think about to ensure you’re getting the right hardware for your cabinets. Ultimately, your kitchen hardware should be functional, and it should help define the look and feel of your kitchen.

In this post, The Kitchen Store shares three factors you should consider when choosing cabinet hardware.

1. Type of Material

A lot of different materials are used to make kitchen cabinet hardware, but most of them are made of metal alloy. Brass hardware is very durable in a kitchen. It isn’t easy to scratch or break, and it is antimicrobial — which means that it helps to stop the spread of germs by killing them. There are also a lot of good things about bronze hardware. It’s antimicrobial, and it works well with cabinets made of thicker wood. Stainless steel is also a good choice because it is very durable and easy to keep clean. Pewter and nickel are also good choices. If you want a vintage look, you can select glass, crystal, or ceramic.

2. Durability and Functionality

When selecting handles, it is critical to ensure that they are of high quality and well-designed. Consider how frequently you open and close your kitchen cabinet doors and drawers. Your handles should be as comfortable as they are fashionable. Try out the handles you’re thinking of purchasing. Test how easy they are to grip and how they feel in your hand by holding one against your cabinet doors.

3. Size and Positioning of Handles

When choosing the size of a knob or pull for your kitchen cabinetry, think about proportion, balance, aesthetics and function. For proper functionality, an oversized cabinet door or drawer requires a large piece of hardware. For a smaller door or drawer, a smaller knob or pull is appropriate. For traditional or transitional style pulls, a good rule of thumb is that they should be about one-third the length of the cabinet drawer. On drawers, pulls are positioned horizontally, while on doors, they are positioned vertically. For a sleek look in a modern kitchen, consider placing the pulls on the doors horizontally. Consider how you want the knobs and pulls to be positioned before they are permanently attached to the cabinetry, regardless of the style of your kitchen.
