Understanding Kitchen Cabinet Grades

Are you planning to add brand new cabinets to your kitchen space? To come up with the best decision for your budget and home, it is important to understand the several basic types of kitchen cabinets the market has to offer. Our kitchen remodeling designers at The Kitchen Store share a brief breakdown of different kitchen cabinet grades, including the quality of material used, choices in style, and more.

Stock or Entry-Level Cabinets

Stock kitchen cabinets available in limited trim and features. The construction of the cabinets are often made from thin veneered particleboard or decorative paper applied on particleboard, while the drawer box uses stapled particleboard or stapled wood. The shelving is coated particleboard or unfinished plywood with plastic shelf pins. The surface finish of cabinet doors is either laminate or thermofoil.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom kitchen cabinets are common in a traditional kitchen design. These cabinets come in a wide variety of door styles, finishes, trims, and accessories. Cabinets are constructed from engineered wood, while drawer boxes and cabinet doors range between stock and custom-made. The shelving is particleboard or cabinet-grade plywood.

Custom Cabinets

Custom kitchen cabinets have the most choices for door style, finish, trim, and accessories. Cabinets are made with cabinet-grade plywood and the drawer box has solid wood sides with dovetail joinery. The shelving is made with cabinet-grade plywood and equipped with metal shelf tracks. Cabinet doors have a solid wood frame enclosing a solid wood floating panel.
