Particleboard vs Plywood for Kitchen Cabinets: Pros and Cons

Installing custom kitchen cabinets in your home can be a difficult task for homeowners to undertake. After all, you’ll have to choose the material of the cabinet and with the abundance of options out there, it can be difficult to pick. When it comes to material, however, there are two that homeowners tend to think of immediately: particleboard and plywood.

Here, the kitchen remodeling professionals of The Kitchen Store reveals the pros and cons of using particleboard and plywood for your kitchen cabinets.

Particleboard: Pros and Cons

Particleboard has greater dimensional stability compared to plywood and it doesn’t warp due to temperature fluctuations and environmental changes. Another advantage of this material is that it’s a less costly alternative to plywood as they’re made of recycled wood, allowing you to save a significant amount on cabinet costs.

According to custom kitchen remodeling experts, however, particleboard does have a major downside; it lacks moisture resistance, meaning the particleboard will swell if it’s continuously exposed to water.

Plywood: Pros and Cons

On the other hand, if you don’t mind spending a little extra for your cabinets, then plywood is the cabinet material for you. One of the advantages of plywood is that it has superior construction longevity due to the screws and mechanical fasteners that hold it together. Apart from that, it also has superior tensile and shearing properties and an advantage in compressive strength. They’re also very resistant to dents and scratches. However, continuous exposure to wet conditions can easily compromise the strength and durability of plywood cabinets.

Which One to Choose

Choosing between plywood and particleboard for your kitchen cabinets isn’t an easy task since they both offer tempting advantages. However, if you plan to hang a large kitchen cabinet, then it’s best to go for plywood due to their superior construction and design. If you decide to opt for particleboard, on the other hand, make sure to have it protected by laminate or wood veneer to prevent scratches. Regardless of what you choose, know that The Kitchen Store will be there to help you.
